This is brilliant Tom! Thx so much for creating and sharing. I wish you all the luck. And looking forward to following your journey here on your Substack. Thx Tom!
Such an interesting piece. I plead guilty to being the woman who buys the paperback fiction by other women, particularly if it has won an award or been on the bestseller lists . Luckily it hasn't led to any regrets, I particularly adored Lessons in Chemistry, and Small Things. But I also buy a lot of nonfiction, history and biography. For these I read newspaper reviews, but often something just grabbed my attention, good cover, intriguing title, conscious gap in my knowledge. My fiirst book is due out next May, it's a biography of the founding brothers of Macmillan & Co, and I am fascinated to see how the marketing plan will come together. And yes I am available for events!
This is a great read - thanks Tom. I love a bit of data crunching and especially enjoyed the point you made about not understanding Pirinasi for the first 50 pages lol.
