This has reminded me of the books I read as a teenager because my mum had finished with them on holiday! I'd never have picked up Victoria Hislop's The Island but I *loved* it. And I first read Freakonomics - problematic though it is - because some other pre-teen had finished with it on holiday, and it came to drive a lot of my life choices.
